Taupo police station has closed after a member of the public presented the station with what is believed to be a piece of historic military equipment, police said in a statement on Monday.
The station and its surrounding buildings, located on Story Place in Taupo Central, have been evacuated as a precaution.
Police are advising the public to avoid the area and cordons are in place.
The New Zealand Defence Force's explosive ordnance team has been notified and is working with police to ensure the military equipment is safe and poses no risk to the public.
