A large number of buildings in south Dunedin were evacuated on Thursday night after the discovery of an unstable chemical.

The New Zealand Defence Force has been called in to Blis Technologies to dispose of it. A meeting will be held Friday morning to decide on the best way.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said options include moving it off-site for disposal or disposing of it on site.

There is no plan at this stage to perform a controlled explosion.

Properties on both sides of the corner of Sulivan Ave and Glasgow St will be affected.
