Gun owners planning on heading to a buyback collection event in Auckland this weekend are being advised of a change in time and venue.

The collection event will now be held on Sunday, July 28 at Mt Smart Stadium, Gate C, East Lounge, at 2 Beasley Ave, Penrose.

It will take place from 9am to 2pm.

The event is one of nearly 200 opportunities for gun owners around the country to hand over their weapons, following the change to firearm laws that was enacted after March's Christchurch mosque shootings.

Military-style semi-automatic weapons were banned in the country following the massacre, in which 51 people were killed.

The buyback process is in place between June 20 and December 20. The Government will pay gun owners affected by the law change between 25 percent and 95 percent of the value of the weapon, depending on its condition.

Seven hundred people attended collection events last weekend, with more than 1000 firearms handed in and more than $1.7 million compensated to owners.

Gun owners must have a valid firearms licence to take part in the buyback process, and while weapons belonging to unlicensed owners will be accepted, they won't receive compensation.
