Witness living in fear after Otara shooting

A witness to a shooting in south Auckland says she's now living in fear after a teenager was seriously injured on Friday night.

It's the fifth shooting in Otara this year, but community leaders say the incidents aren't a reflection of the community.

There is little evidence now of the dramatic scene that took place just 12 hours ago when a car was wrapped around a concrete power pole in the South Auckland suburb.

"I felt the house shaking, I thought it was an earthquake," a witness told Newshub.

The witness, who is too frightened to be identified, ran outside and says she saw a man get out of the car, run past her house and jump a fence.

"He said someone down there was chasing him and was going to shoot at him."

"Down there" is Preston Rd Reserve, where she was also told another man had been injured.

"[I was told] that someone was in the alley, just down here, that was shot up," the witness said.

She says her partner immediately ran to help.

"I found out that my partner had done CPR on that guy and he came to. And my partner said 'are you okay?'. And then the ambulance came."

Police say a male teenager suffered a gunshot wound. He was treated at the scene before being taken to Middlemore Hospital for surgery, where he remains in a serious condition.

"[I was] really terrified because it's really dark in the alley, and just another shooting happened on Dawson [Rd]," said the witness.

The shooting was the fifth in Otara so far this year.

Newshub has spoken to community leaders who say that while the latest incident is concerning, they don't believe the recent string of shootings is a true representation of Otara.

They say shootings happen all over New Zealand and people shouldn't be scared to enjoy the culture and colour of the suburb.

Armed police remain at the scene of the latest shooting, and have been going door to door trying to piece together exactly what happened.
