Bethells Beach cocaine prompts humourous curiosity from West Aucklanders

A massive haul of cocaine that washed up on a west Auckland beach has prompted a tongue-in-cheek response from Westies.

On Thursday, police revealed 19 packages of cocaine with a street value of approximately $3 million had washed up on Bethells Beach.

Detective Inspector Colin Parmenter said police and customs searched the beach and surrounding area for more packages, but further bundles of cocaine could eventually turn up.

That's got some on the west coast joking that they may need to head out on a walk along the beach to test their luck.

On a west Auckland community Facebook page, one user posted: "Ok whose been for a walk down the beach today? Hook us up."

That post has received more than 100 likes and multiple comments from people encouraging each other go hunting.

"Good to see so many people out at the beach, and all the boats going out...enjoying the winter season! Maaan it was packed..... anyone think it was summer (sic)," said one person.

Another user said: "Good time to try out the Te Henga track to Bethells!"

People on Twitter had a similar idea.

"I'll bet there will be a lot of people interested in Bethells and nearby beaches," said one Twitter user, while another said: "Parking might be a problem for the next few days."

But those thinking about heading out for a score may want to have a quick look at the Misuse of Drugs Act. According to that legislation, an individual with half a gram of cocaine or more is presumed to have it for supply.

Parmenter said that there would be further patrols on the beach and enquiries were underway into where the drugs were coming from.
