Boy racers kill dog in Christchurch hit-and-run, calls for anti-cruising bylaw in hill suburbs

A Christchurch man whose dog died in his arms after a hit-and-run, says boy racers are terrorising his community.

A video was uploaded to Facebook of boy racers running over and killing the small dog along one of the city's busiest roads.

Per Jacobsen, out on a routine walk, had let his two dogs off their leash to chase a ball in a reserve on Dyers Pass Rd, when a backfiring car started a devastating series of events.

Three-year-old Jack was run over by boy racers, who left him for dead.

Jacobsen says the driver then accelerated off up the 50km/h street.

"It's so hard to accept that in our local community that we've got to live with these people in our day-today lives," he told Newshub. "As soon as the sun goes down, residents here feel unsafe."

Jacobsen wants his suburb to be made a "no cruising" area.

"I don't want them here," he said. "I don't want them terrorising our neighbourhood.

"I don't care what they say, I don't care what their argument's are. I have no time for these people that don't even live here."

Cashmere Ward councillor Tim Scandrett told Newshub the incident was a tragedy, and could have been a walker or jogger.

"We get bottle through windscreens," he said. "We get a lot of vandalism, we get cars through fences."

An anti-cruising bylaw was introduced in the city in 2010, now there's fresh calls for it to be introduced in the hill suburbs, and for speed cameras to be installed urgently.

The Christchurch City Council says it will look into speed limits in the hill suburbs.
