Canterbury settlement Lower Selwyn Huts underwater as heavy flooding strikes

Properties in Lower Selwyn Huts have gone underwater as heavy rain strikes the region.

Torrential downpours have meant heavy flooding for the small Canterbury settlement, south of Christchurch, which is located close to Lake Ellesmere and the Selwyn River.

Images show the streets and surrounding paddocks drowned by the water after the river rose over its banks.

And with the weather turning, more rain is expected to be on the way.

"Most of the country will get a decent dose of rain, but the largest accumulations are forecast between Christchurch and Dunedin in the South Island," MetService says.

A Newshub reporter at the scene spoke to a local who is worried about getting through Saturday night.

He's hoping the opening from the lake into the sea will mean the flooding drains quickly enough.
