A Canterbury soldier has been sentenced to 28 days in military detention for assaulting another soldier of a lower rank.

Daniel Turua, 32, grabbed the victim by the throat, pinned him against a wall and punched him in the head and face in September.

Turua later threatened the rest of the platoon.

He had pleaded guilty to assault, ill-treatment and threatening language.

Turua will also be demoted by two ranks, from Corporal to Private, following a Court Martial at Burnham Military Camp on Monday.

Judge Heemi Taumaunu took into account his early guilty pleas to assault, ill-treatment and threatening language, and his establishment of a corporals group to understand the needs of soldiers.
