Charity fundraising for homeless hit-and-run victim Dean Amies' funeral

A charity is fundraising to help pay for the funeral of a man killed in a hit-and-run in Christchurch.

New Brighton man Dean Amies was killed on Wednesday afternoon by a man allegedly driving a stolen vehicle.

Street Wise Charitable Trust chairperson River Jayden told Newshub funerals are a huge cost.

"We know that money's very tight and we want to do everything that we can to help the whanau.

"The man who tragically lost his life was involved with Street Wise - it's a priority with us to do everything we can to help."

Jordan said the local community is struggling to cope after the incident.

"I just think it's a pretty sad time. We've lost someone in New Brighton, but knowing that a 15-year-old boy witnessed his father get hit, that's a tragedy within itself."

Funeral donations can be made on Street Wise's Facebook page.

Meanwhile, Canterbury police are being armed for the foreseeable future as they search for the man allegedly involved the hit-and-run that killed Amies.

Six people were taken into custody on Thursday after a series of search warrants were executed around Christchurch.

The accused, 21-year old accused Liam Strickland is still on the run.
