Parts of Hawke's Bay Hospital were evacuated on Sunday morning due to a chemical spill.

Emergency services in Hastings were called at 9:35am after a spill in the maternity ward. Fire and Emergency told Newshub the strong-smelling substance was formalin.

No one was hurt. Five trucks and four support vehicles attended the scene to isolate it.

Police urged the public to stay away unless it was an emergency.

At 12:30pm they lifted the cordon and thanked the public for their patience.
