A short sharp jolt rattled Wellington on Thursday afternoon.

The earthquake hit the Capital at 4.10pm. Geonet reports it was magnitude 4.6, hitting east of Seddon.

The earthquake struck at a depth of 12km. Over 3000 people reported feeling the quake.

"Felt that 9/12 floors up on The Terrace," one woman wrote on Twitter.

"I don't LIKE it! Two quick sharp jolts," said another.

The quake was felt all the way in Lower Hutt, according to a commenter on Geonet's Tweet.
