A former member of Gloriavale has been convicted of child sex abuse.

His link to the Christian community and facts of the case can now be reported.

The man was sentenced to six months home detention on two representative charges relating to an under-16-year-old - indecent assault and unlawful sexual connection.

He has told Newshub he deeply regrets what happened, and handed himself into police knowing he could go to jail.

The man said he wanted to set an example to others that the behaviour is wrong, and didn't want to live life with a shadow over him.

"You don't have to be a great person to be honest - just do it," he told Newshub.

He cannot be named due to permanent suppression.

Gloriavale says it has no comment to make on the matter.
