Three men who escaped from police in Levin on Wednesday are still on the run Thursday morning.

The offenders managed to restrain an officer while being placed into transport, and drove away in a bystander's car. They later got out and continued their escape on foot.

Police named the trio as Wiremu Eparaima, 30, Te Wera Hemara, 27, and Emmanuel Witana, 23.

Horowhenua District Mayor Michael Feyen says their getaway raises a lot of questions.

"The police, they'll sort it all out. They'll probably have to look at a few things if they got away, so it could be interesting to see what happens."

Police say they are not dangerous, and are still seeking information on their whereabouts.

Feyen says he's not too worried.

"I've been advised everything is under control - there are no problems, there's no worries about them being dangerous. It's about as good as it gets."

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward - call 111 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
