A man has been arrested after the death of a five-month-old baby boy in Whangarei last night.
On Thursday night, police were called to a Whangarei address by ambulance staff to find a baby had died at the scene.
Police arrested a 28-year-old man at the address. He has been charged with assault on a child.
"Our investigation remains ongoing and we cannot rule out the possibility of further charges being laid," Det Insp Dene Begbie said in a statement on Friday.
The arrested man will appear in the Whangarei District Court on Friday morning.
"Our deepest sympathies are with the family during this difficult time," said Det Insp Begbie.
