Hunt continues for driver of stolen van involved in fatal hit-and-run

A hunt continues for the driver of a stolen van who hit a pedestrian while fleeing police this afternoon.

Police said the incident unfolded about 1:55pm. The pedestrian died at the scene. 

A police statement said 21-year-old Liam Strickland was urgently sought in relation to the incident.

The statement said Strickland is 182 centimetres tall, and of a medium build with dark hair.

He also has tattoos on his forehead and right cheek, the statement said.

"He has a number of warrants for his arrest."

Acting Canterbury District commander Superintendent Mike Johnson said Strickland is considered dangerous, and should not be approached.

"Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to call 111."

Residents shocked

Bud Ramsay was in the area at the time of the incident. He spoke of his shock, saying everyone in the suburb knows each other.

"Everyone goes about their day-to-day lives, and when something like this happens, everyone comes out onto the street wondering what happened."
