A mother and her three children have managed to escape a massive house fire in Dunedin unharmed.

Emergency services were called to Richardson St in St Clair at around 2:30am Monday.
A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency said the blaze started in the back of the house, but spread to cause extensive damage.
It is not being treated as suspicious.
