A motorist collided with a parked car in Dunedin on Monday after the driver reportedly became distracted eating hotcakes.

About 5am Wednesday,  police received reports of a crash on North Rd in the suburb of Normanby.

Police say the parked car was damaged and no-one was injured in the incident.

The Otago Daily Times reports the driver was consuming hotcakes when the 30-year-old collided with the parked car.

A police spokesman told Newshub the road was not blocked and inquiries are ongoing.

Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of Dunedin, told the ODT that given the recent winter weather, drivers needed to have continuous concentration on the road.

The NZ Transport Agency says drivers should avoid or minimise eating food while driving, as it can be a potential hazard.
