At least one person remains in hospital after slabs of ice fell from a building at Ruapehu on Saturday afternoon, hitting snow-goers below.

The sister of NZ First MP Jenny Macroft was among the five injured, and had to be airlifted off the mountain.

She says her sister's children were also hit.

"One of the nieces looked up and just saw this cascade of blocks of ice just raining down on them. She said it was absolute chaos that ensued afterwards."

It's understood three people were admitted to Waikato and Whanganui hospitals.

Marcroft's sister had surgery overnight for a broken ankle. Her niece had minor injuries and her nephew received a head laceration, NZME reported.

"There was a lot of noise, there was a lot of blood," Marcroft told Newshub. "Her mother - my sister - was hit and slung backwards."

Ice and snow has reportedly been cleared from the roof of the building to prevent a repeat.
