Bushfire breaks out near Wellsford, school evacuated

Fire crews are mopping up after a large bushfire broke out in Wellsford, threatening a local school.

Emergency services were called to the fire on Oruawharo School Rd near Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngaringaomatariki at 10:30am on Tuesday.

Six fire appliances, two helicopters and a command unit were sent to battle the blaze.

The school was evacuated by police as a precaution, a police spokesperson confirmed to Newshub.

Seven staff and students from the local school, Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngaringaomatariki, were taken to a local marae.

"The landowner is assisting police with enquires to establish what caused the fire," the spokesperson said.

There are no reports of injuries so far.

Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngaringaomatariki did not respond to calls.
