Christchurch hit-and-run suspect at large for nine days arrested

The driver allegedly involved in a horror-hit-and-run last Wednesday has been arrested by police.

The 21-year-old had been at large since August 7.

Acting District Commander Superintendent Mike Johnson said on Friday the armed offenders squad had located and arrested the man in relation to the death of Dean Amies, in the suburb of New Brighton.

Supt Johnson said the investigation into the death continues.

"We would like to thank members of the public in Canterbury for their assistance and understanding."

Armed police had been out in force since the incident, working to arrest the man.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased at this time," Supt Johnson said.
