Police stand down after false alarm at Invercargill Airport

An incident that saw police descend on Invercargill Airport on Friday morning has turned out to be a false alarm.

Police said it was believed fugitive Hori Gemmell had boarded an outbound flight.

Airport management earlier confirmed to Newshub there was a large police presence there, but police wouldn't say why.

Police later confirmed they had conducted a search of the plane, and Gemmell wasn't there.

The 24-year-old is accused of stealing a police car and two pistols in Gore on Wednesday.

"Officers will continue to undertake enquiries and execute search warrants where necessary, based on information received, until the wanted man is found and the stolen firearms safely recovered," police said in a statement.
