A protester sitting on the awning of an ANZ bank in central Auckland has willingly climbed down and is talking to police.

The man, wearing a high-vis jacket, was sitting on the awning of the bank's branch at the intersection of Queen St and Custom St East.

He had hung three large sheets with various messages written on them.

Text on the sheets refered to a number of issues including "police authority abuse" and corruption in Chile.

One line said "Jacinda, help me please", while another read "We are not in Guantanamo".

Earlier in the day ANZ told Newshub: "ANZ 45 Queen Street is still operating as usual. We will co-operate with the NZ Police and NZ Fire Service if required."

Auckland Transport was not aware of any traffic issues in the area.

After the man used a ladder to climb down, he shook the hands of various people watching from the street.

He was then put into the back of a police car and his banners were taken down by the fire service.
