Search and rescue operation underway after avalanche at Remarkables, Queenstown

Emergency services are on standby following an avalanche in the Remarkables mountain range, near Queenstown.

Police were alerted to the avalanche at 1:45pm and said it occurred one ridge over from the Remarkables ski field. 

A search and rescue operation was launched as a team attempted to confirm no one has been injured.

"Ski-patrol staff have completed a search and at this time believe no one has been caught in the avalanche," a police spokesperson said.

Police were continuing to liaise with ski patrol personnel, and search and rescue staff are on standby in the area.
