An elderly woman and a sheep are driving across the country to fight plans for a massive marina on Waiheke Island.

More than 15,000 people have signed a petition against the proposal for Kennedy Bay. Sue Pawley, who walks with crutches, and a sheep named Multi will travel more than 700km from the island to Wellington to stop a 186-berth marina and a floating concrete carpark.

"I will do everything I can to stop this marina being built," said Pawley.

Kathryn Ngapo is joining the pair, and told Newshub the sheep is more than just a mascot.

"Multi raised $14,000 by wearing a barrel on her back to fight this marina. She also got us another donation, from a wealthy donor, of $100,000."

The petition will be delivered to Parliament this week.

Ngapo says the Kennedy Pt proposal would destroy the area.

"I'm worried about the ecological degradation of the landscape. Also because it's an incredibly historic area for Maori, I'm really disappointed... The Hauraki Gulf is a taonga, it's a gift. It's precious. I don't think people realise how fantastic a place it is, and how we should value it and treasure it."

The marina was approved by the Environment Court in 2018, and the High Court rejected appeals against it in April.
