Police are looking for a man caught on CCTV in relation to a stabbing at a service station in Christchurch.

A man and a woman entered the store on the corner of Edgeware Rd and Cranford St at about 6:30am, police said.

They were followed in by two men. As the first couple left, one of the two men "made an offensive gesture".

The man and women "continued on their way", but the man returned soon afterwards with an "associate".

One of the other group - still at the service station - approached the returning man and stabbed him.

The victim was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The alleged stabber, seen in a CCTV image released by police, was originally wearing a black top and black pants - but later donned a red T-shirt with the word 'ITALIA' on the back.

Anyone with information about the incident or who recognises the man in the photo is urged to call 105 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
