Weather: 'Antarctic southerly' to bring cold snap to New Zealand

A cold snap is forecast to freeze the country midweek as Antarctic winds are dredged up towards New Zealand.

"A big storm well south of the country is working with other lows to dredge up an Antarctic southerly on Tuesday that see some snow to low levels in the south and a brief nationwide temperature drop," WeatherWatch says.

"The Antarctic southerly behind this event is coming from the iceshelfs but will be mostly be dredged up to our south-east."

WeatherWatch warns single-digit highs will affect a number of regions on Tuesday and/or Wednesday.

"The South Island is impacted by the colder than average air and wind chills below zero are expected with showers, sleet and even some low level snow on Tuesday," it says.

"Sea level snow is possible in Milford Sound while a few flurries will make it in to Southland and Otago, possibly down to 100m.

"Dunedin City may get a few flurries on Tuesday night too and into Wednesday morning at the peak of this cold snap."

Queenstown is expected to drop to 4C on Wednesday, and even Wellington might struggle to reach 10C on Wednesday.

Fortunately, this cold weather won't last for long as warmer air from Australia slides through by Wednesday and spreads over the country on Thursday.
