Weather: Auckland close to breaking rainy day record

Auckland is nearing the record for the number of rainy days as more bad weather looms.

"The record is 28 rain days in a month. It's gonna be close!" tweeted NIWA meteorologist Ben Noll.

Auckland is already at 24 rain days in a row, and showers - or the chance of a shower - are forecast for Sunday and Monday, which would take it to 26 days in a row.

At this stage, MetService's forecast for Tuesday is "fine, apart from isolated showers", meaning the chance of equaling the record will likely come down to Wednesday.

At this stage this is forecast to be fine with light winds, with WeatherWatch saying next week will be dominated by an "early spring pattern".

"Next week NZ's weather is dominated by westerlies with W to SW winds most days with colder weather in the south, warmer weather in the north and driest weather in the east," WeatherWatch says.

After this, winter is predicted to end with a biting cold snap, thanks to a freak atmospheric phenomenon called a sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event.

If it happens, it'll peak between Thursday, August 29 and Monday, September 2. Noll says to expect "cool conditions for the time of year and the potential for an active spell of weather late in the week bringing rain, snow, and wind".
