A young woman who was assaulted in Hastings last week has died of her injuries.

The 22-year-old was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital in the early hours of Thursday morning. She'd been the victim of a serious assault at an address in Camberley.

After being moved to Wellington Regional Hospital, her condition briefly improved from critical to serious, but she deteriorated again on Sunday and has since died.

A homicie investigation has been launched and a number of people are helping police with their inquiries.

Police are appealing to Ranapera Taumata to turn himself into police in relation to the assault. There is a warrant for the 26-year-old's arrest and police have expressed concern for his wellbeing.

Anyone with information about Taumata's whereabouts is urged to call Detective Sergeant Greg Simmons on 06 211 3525, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
