A woman has reportedly been seriously injured after leaving a crashed car she was in and being hit by another vehicle.
Emergency services are currently at the scene of the "serious crash", which occurred on the Mackays to Peka Peka expressway, Otaihanga - which is on the Kapiti Coast - on Saturday afternoon.
The woman was involved in a single-vehicle crash and is then understood by police to have left the vehicle. She was then hit by another vehicle.
"Initial reports suggest the woman is in a serious condition," police said.
"The road is currently down to one lane and may be closed for a short time."
Motorists are being asked to avoid the area due to delays.
The Serious Crash Unit will examine the scene.
