Women's refuge 'shocked and disappointed' after burglary

The operators of a women's refuge that was burgled in south Otago last week say they're "shocked and disappointed" by the crime.

Firewood, bedding as well as a mattress were stolen from emergency housing facility in Balclutha on August 20, the Otago Daily Times reports.

The goods were worth an estimated $500. Manager Sam Munro told the ODT it was a shock.

"The house is in a lovely location next to a school, so we can't work out who would do something like this."

Munro said the burglary seemed "mean-spirited". She told the ODT the stolen items had only just been delivered.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Balclutha Police on 03 418 0203.

"I can confirm we received a report of a burglary," a spokeswoman told Newshub. "Inquiries into the burglary are ongoing."
