Search and rescue efforts will continue on Monday after a light plane went missing near the Tararua Ranges.

The plane - which had two people on board - went missing when flying between Foxton and Paraparaumu on Sunday. It was last detected on the eastern side of the Tararua Ranges, high in the mountains west of Eketahuna.

Search and Rescue told Newshub the two missing men were from Kapiti and were believed to be on a training flight.

An airforce helicopter will join the search on Monday at first light if weather permits. It's coming from Ohakea and will carry a land search and rescue team.

A second search and rescue team will come in from land from Putara Road.
