The hunt is on for a man accused of unsuccessfully trying to rob a central Otago Night and Day store while wearing a pillowcase.

On Saturday night, police received a report about the attempted robbery at the Alexandra store about 11pm.

The man entered the dairy and threw a rock, breaking a glass cabinet.

A police statement said the man demanded money and cigarettes from two shop workers. Police say the workers then hid out the back of the store.

The man then attempted to open the cigarette cabinet himself, but failed and fled on foot.

"He is described of solid build and was wearing what appeared to be a pillowcase over his head," police said in a statement.

One of the workers sustained minor injuries after being cut by glass.

"Any members of the public that recognise this man or have any information about the incident are asked to contact police on 105 or by going to the Alexandra police station," police said.

"Information can also be passed on anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
