A man in his 60s wanted in relation to the abduction and sexual violation of a 17-year-old in Auckland last week has been arrested.

He was found in Tauranga, and has been charged with abduction and sexual violation. Police say further charges may follow, as the investigation into the incident is ongoing.

A second male believed to have taken part is yet to be located.

The teen was at the New World carpark in Mt Roskill last Friday when she was allegedly forced into a vehicle by the 62-year-old suspect, and held down by another man.

Police say she was driven to Roseman Ave where she was sexually violated. She eventually managed to break free and escape.

A witness said the victim's screams made her believe someone was being murdered.

"I've come out and I've seen this young girl and she's, like, screaming for help and she's literally collapsed in front of my house," the unnamed woman told RNZ.

When she and others tried to help, one of the attackers tried to "run us down", she added.

After the attack, she gave the victim a blanket and a hug.

"I'm a friendly face [and] apparently she'd been in that vehicle for some time with the man."

A second sexual attack took place later that night in Blockhouse Bay, also carried out by two men. Police believe the incidents may be linked.

"We have received a number of calls from members of the public which we are thankful for, but we know someone out there will have information which can assist police in identifying and locating this man," said Det Insp Beard.

"Even if it is only minor, we want to hear from you."

Anyone with information is urged to call police on (09) 3026557 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. Police say you can also send them a private message on Facebook.
