Eight helicopters battling Dunedin scrub fire, evacuations underway

An evacuation centre at the Flagstaff Community Church will remain on standby overnight as fire crews monitor the Dunedin scrub fire.

The blaze broke out on Flagstaff Hill, northwest of Dunedin, blanketing the city in smoke. At the peak, eight helicopters were used to battle the blaze.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson told Newshub the fire is under control, however crews will remain to monitor the fire overnight as there is still concern about strong winds coming in early Tuesday morning.

Dunedin City Council Civil Defence staff will also be on standby overnight.

Some of the residents on Rudd Road who were evacuated earlier have been allowed to return to their properties. The rest remain evacuated.

A council spokesperson says five families visited the evacuation centre, but have since made other arrangements for the night.

If anyone has welfare needs, they are asked to phone 03 477 4000.
