Kiwi couple reportedly among Philippine plane crash victims

Two New Zealanders have died in a plane crash in the Philippines.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) confirmed the deaths on Monday.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the family of the two New Zealanders who sadly died in the plane crash in the Philippines," a spokesperson said.

"For privacy reasons, no further information can be provided."

It is believed the victims were a couple from Northland.

According to local media, the couple were among nine people on the plane, which crashed in Calamba City on Sunday afternoon.

The light, private plane burst into flames after crashing, razing a number of residential houses. 

Seven passengers, a co-pilot and a pilot were on board the plane reports the Philippine Star. 

One of the New Zealanders was in need of medical care and was travelling on the plane as a patient, according to media outlets in the Philippines. He was accompanied by his wife, and the other passengers included a doctor and two nurses who were treating the New Zealand man.

Two people on the ground were also were also injured in the crash.

The 11-seater King Air 350 with tail number RPC 2296, departed from Dipolog City.
