Police have arrested one person following a firearms incident on Te Ngae Road in Owhata, a suburb of Rotorua.

Police had been following a vehicle, believed to be stolen, at around 5:35pm on Sunday.

A man exited the car and fired at police, hitting the patrol car, says Acting Rotorua Area Commander, Inspector Brendon Keenan.

A person sustained moderate injuries during the incident.

The alleged offender then threatened a bystander and stole their vehicle, before stopping at another address further down Te Ngae Road and taking a second vehicle.

The car was pursued by police and was spiked, stopping on State Highway 30 near Okatina Road.

A firearm has been recovered and the alleged offender has been taken into custody.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
