Police condemn group caught sliding down Dunedin street on wheelie bins

Wheelie bin riding is back in the spotlight, after a group was caught sliding down a steep Dunedin Street over the weekend.

Footage of the incident emerged on Saturday and the group were spoken to by police.

In 2001, a woman died after sliding down a street in a wheelie bin, and hitting a parked trailer.

A police spokesperson told Newshub a report was received about a group of people riding wheelie bins on Union St, between Queen and George Sts, about 2pm Saturday.

"While no further action was required by the police in this instance, this sort of activity is strongly discouraged due to the risk of harm to those involved and to other road users."
