A serious crash blocked multiple lanes on Auckland's Southern Motorway on Thursday.

At about 10:10am, the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) tweeted that a crash had blocked lanes southbound on the Auckland Southern Motorway near the Alfriston Rd overbridge.

Only one lane south was flowing for about an hour, and the NZTA warned of significant delays for motorists.

Newshub was told by a driver at the scene that roughly six to eight cars and a truck appeared to be involved. He said that some of the cars looked to have been cut in half with their doors ripped off.

Four St John vehicles attended the scene and treated seven parties. Four were taken to Middlemore Hospital. Three had moderate injuries and four had minor injuries.

At 11:20am, the NZTA said that two lanes were open, however, delays continued.
