Weather: High temperatures, rainfall on the way due to 'spring chaos'

The temperature is expected to change wildly today as "spring chaos" hits New Zealand.

Chilly single-digit temperatures hit the South Island on Monday, but today it's expected to be up to 10 degrees warmer.

"It's all to do with airflows - on Monday a high around southern NZ was dredging up a very cold southerly out of the Southern Ocean. Many places had highs between 7 and 9 degrees on Monday," forecaster WeatherWatch said.

"Now Thursday we have a westerly flow kicking in from Australia and this will warm up further as it crosses over the Southern Alps, pushing southern and eastern temperatures up this afternoon with highs of 16 to 19 degrees forecast and perhaps one or two maybe even breaking 20."

The North Island will get hit by the warm weather on Friday before it cools down over the weekend.

Next week is also expected to have a bit of rainfall, although some parts of the country will also get the chance to dry out a little, according to WeatherWatch.

Western areas like Taranaki and the South Island's west coast are expected to be wetter than usual, while the eastern coast of the country will get a bit less wet.

It will be a welcome relief for the Coromandel, which has struggled with flooding across the week.
