A Taupō offender has been captured by police after a manhunt involving the armed offenders squad and an Eagle helicopter.

Police say they attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle believed to be driven by a wanted offender in Wharewaka at about 1pm on Sunday.

However the driver escaped the scene and fled toward Taupō on State Highway 1.

Armed units were then deployed to assist Bay of Plenty Police to apprehend the alleged offender.

Police say the offender was taken into custody without incident just before 4pm after they were found in a forestry area east of Lake Taupō.
