A celebrity seal living in Auckland's Waitematā Harbour has been seen bleeding after allegedly being shot in the face on Saturday.

Photos of Owha, taken by not-for-profit organisation LeopardSeals.org, show blood coming from her nostrils and smeared on her face.

NIWA marine mammal biologist Dr Krista Hupman said three vets examined the photos and agreed the wound was likely the result of a gunshot.

Researchers are continuing to monitor Owha over the long weekend for any change in her condition or behaviour.

"So far she seems to be doing okay - resting and swimming as usual," Dr Hupman said.

Dr Hupman said any intervention at this stage wouldn't be in Owha’s best interests, but she asks anyone who sees her to call 0800 LEOPARD (0800 536 7273).

The group is interested in creating a timeline of Owha's movements.

In a statement, the Department of Conservation said they would investigate the incident by working closely with leading veterinary advice and the LeopardSeals.org team.

"Whilst at this time we would welcome reports from the public regarding Owha's location and behaviour, we also remind people to stay at least 20m away."

Dogs should also be on leads so Owha isn't stressed.

It is an offence under the Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978 to disturb, harass, harm, injure or kill a seal.

Anyone charged under one of these offences could face up to two years' imprisonment, or a fine up to $250,000.
