The body of a missing tourist has been found in Tongariro National Park.

The 51-year-old Chinese woman was walking the famous Tongariro Northern Circuit with three friends. After setting out on Friday morning, the rest of the group decided to turn back after taking a wrong turn. The woman carried on alone.

She was meant to complete the track on Saturday evening, but was reported overdue on Sunday morning.

Police and Land Search and Rescue (LandSAR) began a search later that day and discovered her body in the afternoon.

Senior Constable Barry Shepherd called the woman's death a tragic outcome.

"We want our visitors to have a good time and make it home safely," he said in a statement.

"Taupo Police and staff from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China have been supporting her three friends, and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."

The woman's death is being investigated and has been referred to the Coroner.
