Christchurch to receive prestigious international compassion award

Christchurch is being awarded a special international honour for its response to the March terror attack.

The Garden City will be given the Compassion Humanitarian Award following residents' response to the mosque shootings that killed 51 people.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel will give a video speech at the awards ceremony, which will take place in Mexico on Thursday.

"We thank the Charter for Compassion for recognising Christchurch on the international stage as we too wish to play our part in making sure that this becomes the way in which we reconnect to our humanity, and that we reject violence, we reject hatred and we reject all that divides us. We are one," she said.

The Compassion Humanitarian Award is handed out in recognition to both cities and organisations.

Executive Director, David Dahlin, says the people of Christchurch have embodied the true spirit of what it means to be human.

The city will also be made a compassionate city, joining more than 400 other cities around the world.
