Family of Dunedin party victim Sophia Crestani call for street clean-up in memory of 'beautiful' daughter

The parents of Dunedin student Sophia Crestani have asked the university to organise a clean-up to help bring students together.

It will be held in north Dunedin between 12pm and 4pm on Sunday, in the Castle St precinct, in honour of Crestani, who died at a flat party at the weekend.

University of Otago Vice-Chancellor Professor Harlene Hayne said it was a good way for her to be remembered.

"I met with Sophia's parents earlier this week, and to honour her memory they requested we engage with our student community to help clean up North Dunedin.

"I would encourage all our students and staff to attend and help honour Sophia at this time," Prof Hayne said.

Those attending are expected to gather by 11:45am at a location yet to be confirmed.

The Otago University Students' Association (OUSA) will provide further detail on the clean-up operation in the coming days.

On Facebook, the OUSA said everyone is welcome to attend to demonstrate "Aroha and Kotahitanga".

"After the tragic events of the past weekend which have rocked the student and great Dunedin community, we encourage everyone to come together and support."

It is believed the 19-year-old was killed during a pile-up inside a Dundas Street flat as panicked party-goers sought to escape the overcrowding.

On Tuesday, the family of Crestani paid tribute to their "beautiful daughter".

"You will appreciate that it is a very difficult time for us," her parents Bede and Elspeth said in a statement.

"We are grieving the loss of our beautiful daughter and so is the community which Sophia knew and cared for."

The family says that the funeral for their daughter, who has a twin, will be private.
