A rainy Friday will give way to warmer than average temperatures for parts of New Zealand.

On Saturday, Temperatures will sit around the late teens and early 20s for Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Canterbury, Marlborough and parts of Otago - a whopping eight degrees warmer than average.

The warmer weather is a stark contrast to the wintery conditions sweeping across the country today.

"A broad and complex low-pressure system is moving across New Zealand and is forecast to move away to the east of the country on Saturday," said Metservice on Friday.

While the system makes its way across, heavy rain warnings are in place for some areas.

Nelson west of Motueka could see heavy rain between 9am Friday and 5am Saturday.

Westland north of Fox Glacier is also under a warning and can expect heavy rain until 11pm Friday.
