Fire and Emergency NZ's area commander Richard Twomey is holding a press conference to provide an update on SkyCity convention centre fire.

The massive inferno at the building in central Auckland burnt for nearly two days with large plumes of toxic smoke being funnelled into the air and causing chaos for commuters and nearby residents.

On Thursday morning, Auckland Mayor Phil Goff said the fire had been put out, but Fire and Emergency say it is just less visible.

It's unlikely the $700 million convention centre will hold the 2021 APEC meeting, with fire and water damage meaning parts of the building will have to be scrapped and rebuilt, pushing the opening date for the centre back months - if not years.
