An iconic Whangarei building is engulfed in flames.
Fire and Emergency have confirmed firefighters were called to the Municipal Building at about 12:45pm on Thursday. There are no reports of any injuries.
A witness told Newshub that they could see flames coming out the top of the building and the heat from the fire was intense.
"Windows were blown out and the top of the tower, the clock, has started smoking and then flames started coming out."
"The heat is pretty intense, you can feel it from across the road."
One person on Twitter said that they could see black smoke from a distance.
"With binoculars, I can see flames on what I think is the old town hall," the user said.
On the Whangarei District Council's Facebook page, it says the Old Municipal Building received a makeover in 2017.
