'Our house is on fire': Extinction Rebellion Aotearoa sends list of demands to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern

Extinction Rebellion Aotearoa, under fire from Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, has responded with a list of demands.

It follows a week of disruption from the climate activist group worldwide, including New Zealand.

"You famously said climate change was this generation's nuclear-free movement. But when Extinction Rebellion uses the tactics of the nuclear-free movement, you say you aren't impressed," reads the open letter.

Extinction Rebellion says although Ardern and the Labour Government have done more than National, it's still not enough.

"This is an emergency," it continues. "Without action we face widespread human misery."

The demands include she tell the "truth" about the climate and declare an emergency, and the Government halt all biodiversity loss and reduces greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.

The final demand is for Ardern to set up a citizen's assembly on climate and ecological justice.

"The citizens' assembly we suggest will bring people with a range of expertise together to learn, deliberate and make recommendations to act," reads the letter.

"Similar to jury service, members are randomly selected from the population and quotas are used to ensure the assembly is representative."

Extinction Rebellion says it will take whatever non-violent action necessary to ensure the Government also transitions to sustainable energy, withdraws oil drilling permits and ends the exploration of fossil fuels.

The organisation likens itself to a fire alarm.

"Fire alarms are disruptive. When our house is on fire and we're asleep, a noisy alarm is what's needed."

"We either make history, or we're history. Like the nuclear-free movement before us, we choose to make history."
