The police dive squad has been called after a car crashed into the Wairoa River, in Western Bay of Plenty.
One person is out of the vehicle and has been taken to the hospital with injuries.
A second person, believed to have been trapped in the car, has not been located.
Emergency services are also undertaking a shoreline search in an effort to find the person.
Police were called to the crash at around 7:40pm.
The road has been closed for the safety of those working at the scene, but is expected to reopen shortly.
