The 33-year-old man on the run from police after allegedly holding officers at gunpoint and then stealing their car has been arrested.

The man has been wanted by police since Saturday night, when officers stopped a vehicle in Ohakune, intending to carry out a breath-screening test on the driver.

While the cops were speaking to the driver, a male passenger allegedly pointed a firearm at the officers. He and a female passenger then allegedly left the car, got into the cop car, and fled.

The pair afterwards crashed the patrol car into a gatepost and ran away on foot.

Armed police searched several properties in the Ohakune area on Monday before arresting the man without incident at a Raetihi address around 9:40pm. A 29-year-old woman was also arrested and taken into custody.

Both will appear before the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday facing several charges.

A scene guard will remain at the property while police investigations continue.

Police wanted to thank the local community for their assistance and patience while the search for the wanted man was underway.

"This has been an intensive investigation involving police staff from a number of districts around the country working together to achieve [Monday's] good result," said Whanganui area investigations manager detective senior sergeant Neil Forlong.
